Nadal Pulls Out Of Barcelona
Rafael Nadal today announced the shock decision that he will not play Barcelona. It’s bad news for tournament organisers, but great news for Nadal fans. Nadal fans who weren’t planning on going, that is. If this were any other player we would not be shocked, but this is Nadal, a sucker for a heavy schedule that more than often results in his demise before the end of the year. After his win in Monte Carlo though, Nadal seems to be a changed man.
Fans and critics have always questioned Nadal’s decision to play tournaments like Barcelona when he constantly criticises the heavy schedule. Finally Nadal is taking moves to lighten his own schedule and although this is a pity for the Barcelona fans, in the long run it will mean more titles for Nadal. Nadal cited that he needed to rest as the reason for withdrawing.
“After Monte Carlo my body is asking me to rest. I feel really bad about this – it is my club and my event… I’ve said several times that the clay season calendar is poorly structured.”
Regardless on whether the clay court season is scheduled poorly, Nadal is finally taking matters into his own hands and appears to be injury free.
Unfortuantly for Barcelona in addition to their main drawcard, Juan Martin del Potro, David Nalbandian, and Tomas Berdych have also withdrawn from the event citing injury.
