Ernests Gulbis Wins A Tennis Match

October 7, 2009

I was going to try and come up with a more eyecatching title… but then I realised that is probably as bigger show-stopping headline as you can get. He didn’t beat some absolute meathead either, he beat Radek Stephanek. A top twenty player with two titles this year. I know, shocking.

Ernie has actually been playing quite well since the US Open. He said in his post match presser that things had started to look up for him since. He has a new coach, Hernan Gumy, with whom he put in ‘two hard weeks of practise’ post Davis Cup.Ernests is playing his usual, aggressive, high risk high reward type tennis that saw him heralded as a new star of the game.

In what could be the quote of 2009, Ernests commented on why he sucked so much ass at the start of the year:
‘ I was standing two metres behind the baseline like a Spaniard and doing nothing ‘.

He plays Monaco next, can he finally win two ATP matches in a row? Erm… really hard to say. Here’s hoping though!

I just saw that Gulbis won his match. But since he came through qualfying doesn’t that mean he’s on a three match win streak? He has a decent shot against Juan Monaco. I saw Gulbis play Safin in L.A. this summer. Talk about similar players. Lots of angsty play followed by self-berating.

Mmm yeah but I don’t think qualifying really counts as winning at ATP level. He also won two matches for Davis Cup. But sure, as a Gulbis fan I think I’ll go with he is on a winning streak đŸ™‚

He does have a shot against Monaco, Gulbis usually has a ‘shot’ against anyone he plays. He really should of beaten Tsonga the other day.

Both really good looking too! đŸ™‚ (Hopefully Gulbis’s career turns out a bit better than Marat’s…)
